V/Line to run more services after delays due to train wheels

Victoria's regional rail operator says it will be able to run more train services this week as it continues work to resolve a problem with the wheels on its fleet.
About 70 trains a day were replaced by coaches last week after a wheel fault and an unrelated boom gate problem forced trains to be taken out of service.
Since Saturday, all V/Line train and coach services have been running for free to compensate commuters, but they will continue to be faced with delays.
Passengers have been told service disruptions will continue at least until the end of this week.
But V/Line spokesman Colin Tyrus said not as many train services would be replaced by buses.
"On the Ballarat line today we'll have 59 services scheduled to operate as trains and approximately 12 as coach services," he said.
"The Bendigo line today will have 34 services to operate as trains, there'll be three towards Melbourne coach replacements and four heading back from Melbourne."
Mr Tyrus said the network was lubricating tracks at key locations to reduce the friction on wheels.
"We hope to be able to slow down the rate of wheel wear, and that'll help us reduce the backlog of trains that are in for wheel changeovers," he said.
The Victorian Government has ordered an inquiry to investigate V/Line's performance.
