An increase in home sales in Western Australia is cause for optimism, according to the Housing Industry Association.
The association's Home Sales Report, which is a survey of the largest volume builders, shows there have been two consecutive months of growth.
Executive director John Gelavis said the increase over the short term was pleasing to see.
"That indicates that we may have seen the bottom of the cycle in Western Australia in terms of new housing sales and also ongoing approvals and commencements," he said.
The June quarter showed an increase of 9.1 per cent in private sector seasonally adjusted house sales.
The positive figures for May and June came after a sharp drop in April.
And the June quarter compared to the same time last year showed a drop in detached house sales of 27.5 per cent.
John Gelavis said he hoped the recent upswing would be a signpost to the future.
"I think it indicates that with interest rates being an all-time low it's an opportunity for first home buyers and others looking to build a home into the market," he said.
"The market over the last 12 months has dropped off.
"But the good news around that is an increased appetite in new house activity."
