Arrium's steelworks in Whyalla are at risk of being mothballed if it cannot turn its financial situation around, jeopardising more than 1,100 jobs.

The ABC's Angelique Donnellan speaks with some of the city's residents about its future.

People have got mortgages young kids going to school, what's your mum and dad going to do?

There's a lot of negatively come over the place you can't find many people who are laughing.

It's just a little bit trying, you know.

It's not easy, but I'm quite sure things will improve when we know when the bottom of all this and confidence will come back and I'm quite sure business will lift.

[I'm] very concerned, especially for the younger people.

It's not so bad for people like me, but I've got two sons, one's already moved out of Whyalla. He had to go to Adelaide and get a job at Yatala, but he's still got a house here that he can't sell.

I'm 58 years going on 59 so where would I go? I guess I could do more voluntary work but people need jobs.
