Shanghai Qipao Art Hall

The art hall contains a display area of 100 classic qipao from the early 20th century, a salon, and a haute couture retail space.

Custom-tailored qipao range from 3,000 yuan (US$489) to more than 100,000 yuan.

The cost is high because tailoring is complicated and more than 30 measurements must be taken for a perfect fit.

Fine fabric and hand embroidery, even with gold threads, is costly.

It takes a month to more than six months to make a qipao.

It is difficult to find master qipao tailors, because perfection requires years of experience. They can earn an annual salary of 200,000 yuan.

Zhou Zhuguang of Hanyi Qipao says that in order to restore the culture of qipao, the garments need to be in daily wardrobes, not just in museums. Customers need to be educated.
