Ayi star-rating system will assess home help

FAMILIES wanting to know about their ayi's background will soon be able to do so - if they can read Chinese.
The Shanghai Household Service Association, which was founded this week and has 71 member companies, is to record details such as ayis' ages, hometowns, experience and credibility on cards that prospective employers can access.
The information and the association's Website (www.shjtfwxh.com) is in Chinese.
Association Director Chen Xizhu said the idea was developed because residents often complained they didn't know about their ayis.
"Some people said they didn't know that their ayi once received bad a assessment until they had suffered a lot," Chen said. "They all said they wouldn't have hired their ayi if they knew earlier. Sometimes even the household companies don't know about an ayi's history."
The association said member companies would be star-rated according to their service quality and credibility. Officials would carry out regular checks to see if they complied with the association's standards. Companies could be expelled if there were complaints.
The city has more than 8,000 household companies and agencies, hiring out more than 300,000 people.
