April start for new way to get around Lujiazui

A CIRCULAR elevated walkway over a busy intersection in Pudong's central Lujiazui area will be open to the public by the end of April.

About 300 deputies to the Pudong New Area People's Congress inspected the under-construction walkway yesterday.

It will eventually form a complete circle over the intersection of Century Avenue, Lujiazui Road W., Lujiazui Ring Road and Fenghe Road.

"Lujiazui has waited for the walkway for a very long time," said Mao Deming, deputy director of Shanghai Lujiazui Development (Group) Corp.

The intersection has no traffic lights so pedestrians have to make long detours or walk across busy roads.

The walkway will help pedestrians get around the area more quickly and safely and give tourists good views of the Oriental Pearl TV Tower and Jin Mao Tower.

It will connect the Lujiazui Metro station and nearby buildings such as the Super Brand Mall.

The current construction work is part of a 470 million yuan (US$68.8 million) elevated walkway project which will be expanded to connect the Jin Mao Tower, Shanghai World Financial Center and Lujiazui Central Green Area.
