15 water tap producers faulted for poor quality
Fifteen local water tap producers have been ordered to suspend production and their substandard products removed from the shelves after their faucets were found to contain excessive level of lead and screw thread problems, the city’s quality watchdog said yesterday.
Excessive level of lead can affect the nervous and reproductive systems.
A total of 510 water taps have been recalled and three companies have been punished for serious quality problems, the Shanghai Quality and Technical Supervision Bureau said.
These companies will only be allowed to resume operation after passing reexamination, bureau officials said.
The bureau has ordered local water tap producers to raise awareness of quality and eliminate potential health risks of products. It said it would step up quality checks of water taps after the tests exposed serious quality problems of local faucets.
A total of 21 batches of faucets out of the 68 checked by the bureau failed quality tests in July. Most of them were produced by Shanghai companies.
