Yang Xiong named city's acting mayor

Yang Xiong, Shanghai's executive vice mayor, was appointed by the city legislature as acting mayor yesterday.
The Standing Committee of the 13th Shanghai People's Congress also accepted the resignation of Han Zheng as mayor. Han was named the city's Party secretary last month.
The new mayor will be elected at the first session of the next municipal people's congress which will run from January 27 to February 2.
"I will deeply cherish the chance to serve Shanghai citizens and always put people's welfare at the highest position in my heart," Yang said in his inaugural speech as acting mayor at the congress standing committee yesterday.
Yang, 59, was appointed deputy Party secretary of Shanghai last Friday.
Yang said he will focus on enhancing the ability and standards of the government in order to better serve the people. "I will make people's expectations the driver of our work," he said.
Yang was appointed vice mayor of Shanghai in 2003 and has been executive vice mayor since 2008.
As executive vice mayor, he took charge of various sections including development and reform, planning, population management, statistics, commodity prices and social stability.
During the World Expo in 2010, he served as executive deputy director of the Shanghai World Expo Executive Committee and took part in preparations both at the World Expo site and across the city.
Yang earned a master's degree in economics in 1985 from the Graduate School of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.
He worked as deputy director of the Economy Research Center of the city government after graduation.
Yang once served as president of Shanghai Airlines Co Ltd and chairman of the supervisors board of Shanghai Airlines Co Ltd until February 2001, when he became vice secretary-general of Shanghai Municipality.
