Runners take on challenge of 66 floors, 1,763 stairs

MORE than 600 people sprinted, jogged and walked up the 320-meter Magnolia Square building yesterday afternoon.
Professional and amateur runners climbed 1,763 stairs to reach the 66th floor of the office tower in Hongkou District.
Both the men’s and women’s championship went to Australian runners.
Besides individuals, there were also competitions among groups categorized into colleague, couple and family.
A highlight of the competition were firefighters.
“It’s part of our routine exercises to climb buildings with 50 floors and taller,” a Hongkou firefighter surnamed Qin told zhoudaosh, the website of Shanghai Morning Post.
“So, it’s a good chance for us to test our training results.”
To welcome the first China International Import Expo, which will run from November 5 to 10, organizers decorated some floors with expo-themed pictures.
The competition is part of the 2018 International Towerrunning Grand Prix.
This year, 10 skyscrapers on the Chinese mainland were chosen to hold the competitions. Of them, four are in Shanghai.
To date, competitions have been held at the city’s Oriental Pearl Tower, Wheelock Plaza and Magnolia Square. Jinmao Tower will hold the competition on November 25.
