Airlines call for in-flight mobile service

CHINA'S major airlines are seeking to provide passengers with mobile services during flights.

Air China, China Southern and China Eastern yesterday said they have signed agreements with telecom operators to develop software for the service while submitting a proposal to the country's aviation and telecom authorities, today's Oriental Morning Post reported.

If allowed, a call in flight would charge 15 yuan per minute, compared with 50 yuan for calls currently availed on the International Maritime Satellite Telephone Service - a wireless phone that uses mobile satellite service to send voice and data, according to industry insiders.

Passengers are required to switch off their mobile phones during flights due to flight safety concerns.

Shenzhen Airlines led the nation to try out in-flight mobile services in 2007. It applied to the aviation and telecom authorities to jointly launch the service with Swiss-based telecom company OnAir but was rejected.
