All MA-60 regional jets grounded after landing gear incident

A CHINESE aircraft maker today grounded all its MA-60 regional jets across the nation after the aircraft's landing gear malfunctioned twice within a month.

The aircraft maker applied to suspend the service of all MA-60 aircraft to the Civil Aviation Administration of China to allow an overhaul on their landing gear systems, Xi'an Aircraft Industry Co announced on its website. The company is part of the Aviation Industry Corp of China (AVIC.)

"The company won't resume their service before the safety of the landing gear can be fully assured," said the major Chinese aircraft maker, which produces many of the nation's air force fighters.

The company has also dispatched engineering teams to overseas client airlines to inspect their MA-60 passenger aircraft. Overseas buyers of the aircraft include airlines in Indonesia and South Africa.

An MA-60 passenger jet owned by Okay Airways flew in circles over the Shenyang airport for over two hours last night after it reported a landing gear failure. The aircraft, carrying 38 passengers, finally managed to land safely.

A preliminary investigation found the landing gear signaling system malfunctioned, the aircraft maker said.

The plane, Flight BK2870, took off at 4:42pm from Tianjin Binhai International Airport. It was scheduled to fly to Yanji city of neighboring Jilin Province via Shenyang, but the rest of the journey was canceled due to the incident.

The aircraft's landing gear sign showed a malfunction as the aircraft was about to land.
