Allianz and PICC offer hotel cancellation insurance

Allianz Global Assistance and China’s largest non-life insurer PICC have teamed up to offer hotel cancellation insurance products as the two companies seek to expand in the domestic online insurance market.

Travelers booking their hotels on Ctrip.com will be able to claim their deposit back in case of cancellation if they purchase the insurance policy as they make the booking, insurers said.

“The number of travelers domestically in China exceeded 300 million last year and the number of travelers abroad was more than 100 million,” said Christophe Aniel, CEO China and North Asia of Allianz Global Assistance. “We are very positive about the tourist market and especially the online booking market.”

Yuan Yuling, vice general manager of PICC e-commerce center, said the product is part of the insurance giant's 14-year long efforts to explore the online territory and appeal to more individual users.

Currently insurance premium is 5 percent of the deposit for domestic hotels and 4 percent for overseas hotels.

The two companies said they will extend the products to more online booking platforms and will use accumulated data to adjust prices and offer differentiated pricing for customers.
