Animation industry to boom with government incentives

CHINA will support animation production, cartoon creation and game development and foster several leading animation companies by 2015. It was announced today at a press conference for the CCG Expo 2012 in Shanghai.

Shanghai will take measures to support the animation industry by providing financial incentives to mobile cartoon and game developers and establishing a new comic book center, industry officials said.

"Animation has become a major growth engine for many sectors such as game, television, film, fashion and publishing," said Liu Yuzhu, a senior official at the Ministry of Culture, at the press conference.

In 2010, China's animation industry achieved a revenue of 47.08 billion yuan (US$7.47 billion), four times the 2005 figure. More than 30 animation films will be produced annually in next three years, compared with fewer than 10 in 2010, Liu added.

The country will also foster five to ten leading animation companies with well-known brands like Xi Yang Yang (happy goat), which can get listed in the domestic market, Liu said.

Shanghai government will invest about 10 million yuan annually to support the animation industry. Each Shanghai-based mobile animation and game developer with a turnover exceeding 500,000 yuan can apply for financial incentives.
