Apple phones less sales in China

Apple Inc said its China revenue decreased 26 percent year-on-year in its second fiscal quarter ended on March 26 with declined iPhone sales and market share in China, which was Apple’s second biggest regional market.

Apple’s revenue in China, traditionally major growth engine and revenue contributor for Apple, was US$12.5 billion in the quarter.

Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook noted that the bulk of the revenue drop for Apple in China was in Hong Kong, where currency linked to the strong US dollar crimped sales while the company fared better on the mainland.

By the end of first quarter, iPhone’s market share in the domestic smartphone market was about 12 percent, compared with 15 percent a quarter ago, according to US-based research firm IHS.

The share of iPhone is expected to continue dropping in China in the following quarters, said Kevin Wang, analyst of IHS.

To lift China’s business, Apple has launched a smaller sized iPhone SE and Apple Pay in the Chinese mainland recently.
