Apple starts delivering new iPhones on the mainland

Apple Inc started delivering new iPhones in the Chinese mainland today, which are available in Apple Stores, telecommunications carrier outlets and online shops. The 64 gigabyte iPhone 6 Plus model is the most popular choice in Shanghai.

Apple delivered new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus models to people who succeeded pre-ordering the phones online at its four local Apple Stores, starting from 10:00 am.

Meanwhile, people can pick up pre-ordered new iPhones at local branches of China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom at midnight. More than 150,000 pre-ordered new iPhones were sold through carriers in Shanghai.

The retail prices of iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, without contracts, vary from 5,288 yuan (US$861) to 7,999 yuan for different models, covering 16 GB, 64 GB and 128 GB. Local carriers offered new iPhones with contracts, offering 20 to 50 percent discount on telecommunications fees.

The iPhone 6 Plus 64 GB, with enough storage space and reasonable price, are the choice of most people. They were out of stock first in China Telecom and China Unicom’s channels.

It takes about three weeks for the next batch of iPhone 6 Plus 64 GB to be delivered, a staff at Apple Store in Huaihai Road said.

Customers can also order or buy the new iPhones at online shops like JD.com and Suning’s websites.

The authorized release once again ignited iPhone fever in the company's largest potential market as media reports said the number of orders has exceeded 20 million after pre-orders started on October 10, according to a Xinhua report.

For 4G networks, new iPhones sold in Apple Stores, China Unicom and China Telecom outlets support both 4G standards including TD-LTE (time division-long term evolution) and FDD-LTE (frequency division duplex-LTE). China Mobile’s models support TD-LTE only in the domestic market but both technologies are supported during roaming to overseas markets.

China Telecom, the country’s biggest fixed-line operator, offered users free family broadband services for iPhone users who subscribed to a monthly package of 399 yuan and above.

The long queues in front of Apple Stores, which appeared during previous iPhone debut in Shanghai, didn’t happen today. Hardcore iPhone fans have bought new iPhones through overseas channels because Apple released the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus in the Chinese mainland one month after its global debut.
