Asian maritime trade fair poised to set records in Shanghai

MARINTEC China 2013, Asia’s largest maritime trade fair, has reached a record high for the show of over 70,000 square meters of exhibition space and all booths have been sold out for the event later this year in Shanghai, even as shipbuilders and shippers are hit hard by a slower economy, organizers said today.

The event will be held on December 3-6 at the Shanghai New International Expo Center in the Pudong New Area with the theme of “Green Technology, Transformation, Breakthrough.”

“While the shipping market remains weak and Chinese yards are not out of the woods yet, we are cautiously optimistic about the outlook of the industry,” said Zhang Shengkun, president of the Shanghai Society of Naval Architects and Ocean Engineers, a co-organizer. Updates on the industry’s latest trends are expected at the show.

China’s State Council last month issued a three-year plan to upgrade and restructure the shipbuilding industry by putting a limit on new capacity and encouraging companies to make more high-tech vessels.

President Xi Jinping has also pledged to turn China into a maritime power and make maritime industries a pillar of the national economy.
