Axalta breaks ground on US$50m plant in city to make eco-friendly auto coatings

AXALTA Coating Systems, a leading coatings supplier, broke ground on a US$50 million plant in Shanghai today to supply China's automobile industry.

The facility in Jiading District will be able to produce 25,000 tons of eco-friendly water-borne coatings per year when production begins in 2015.

Chairman and CEO Charlie Shaver said the new investment will help support China's automotive industry, which is expanding in the southern and western regions of China, as the government requires greater environmental compliance from carmakers.

Also, Shaver said he sees the opportunity to supply water-based coatings to trucks, buses and rail manufacturers, where traditional solvent-borne applications still dominate in China.

Axalta was formerly DuPont Performance Coatings.
