Cannes Lions appoints first Chinese jury president

THE International Festival of Creativity, or the Cannes Lions, which is the world's preeminent advertising award ceremony, has appointed its first Chinese jury president in recognition of China's nascent advertising industry.

Lo Sheung Yan, chairman of JWT China and executive creative director of JWT North East Asia, was appointed president of the Outdoor Jury for 2012, the award committee announced today.

"China won 11 awards at last year's ceremony and ranked 14th place and we recognized more creative ideas from emerging markets are sharing the stage with traditional winning countries," said Terry Savage, chairman of Cannes Lions.

Lo will be among 15 jury presidents to lead judges at the 59th Cannes Lions in June next year.

"This appointment is an encouragement for creative minds working in China that has already turned into an exciting country in terms of the advertising industry," he commented.

A native of Hong Kong, Lo joined JWT China in 1996 and has helped the agency win a string of awards in regional and global advertising competitions, including China's first Grand Prix award at the Cannes Lions this year.
