China Eastern goes cherry picking in US

China Eastern Airlines will offer American cherries to passengers on Shanghai-Beijing flights from the end of the month as the carrier began using charter flights to import the fruit.

The airline will choose three flights between Shanghai and Beijing every day and offer the cherries with meals.

The first charter flights arrived in Shanghai yesterday from Seattle with 400 tons of cherries from the state of Washington. It was the first direct charter flight transporting fruit between China and the United States.

“The charter flight will transport fruits and vegetables between the United States and China to benefit both US producers and Chinese consumers,” said Tian Liuwen, deputy general manger with China Eastern Airlines.

The Shanghai-based carrier will also sell the fruit and other fresh products on its e-commerce site.
