China advances in global competitive ranking

Chinese mainland ranked the 27th in the Global Competitiveness Report 2010-2011 released today by the World Economic Forum, up from last year's 29th.

Switzerland remained in the top spot, followed by the Sweden and Singapore in second and third places. The world's biggest economy United States fell two places to rank the 4th due to an unbalanced macroeconomy, weakening of its public and private institutions, and lingering concerns about its financial markets.

"China continues to lead the way among large developing economies, advancing two more places this year and consolidaing its place among the top 30," the report said.

The three other BRIC economies turned out to be stable as India ranked 51st, Brazil 58th and Russia 63rd.

Several Asian economies showed a strong trend as Japan moved up to 6th from last year's 8th, and Hong Kong Special Administrative Region ranked the 11th.
