China the fastest growing country for online grocery
The proportion of online sales out of the total fast moving consumer goods market size is expected to double in the next 10 years to reach 7.8 percent globally and will surge to 15 percent in China, according to a latest study by consumer research firm Kantar Worldpanel.
By 2025, the total amount of fast moving consumer sales through e-commerce websites is estimated to reach US$130 billion globally.
China is the fastest growing country with online grocery sales adding 34 percent from 2013 to 2014.
As much as 35.9 percent of Chinese households shop through online channels at least once in the past year, according to Kantar.
“The e-commerce channel is providing FMCG players with genuine growth opportunity as consumers are increasingly embracing the new channel for their everyday grocery motivated by wide product choices, convenience and price," said general manager of Kantar Worldpanel China Jason Yu.
With more investments into distribution network and cold chain delivery as well as government's efforts to promote cross-border e-commerce, the growth look set to continue in the next 10 years, he added.
