China鈥檚 FAI grows rapidly since 1978
China鈥檚 fixed-asset investment has continued to grow rapidly since the country began to implement the reform and opening-up policy in 1978 and has been an important force behind its economic growth, official data showed yesterday.
Between 1981 and 2017, fixed-asset investment totaled 490 trillion yuan (US$71.83 trillion), with an average annual growth rate of 20.2 percent, the National Bureau of Statistics said on its website.
The contribution of investment to China鈥檚 economic development also stayed high, with the share of investment in GDP up from 38.9 percent in 1978 to 44.4 percent in 2017.
The share peaked in 2011 at 48 percent and fell after that as China鈥檚 economy steered away from over-reliance on investment and exports to the coordinated driving forces of consumption, investment, and exports.
Last year, the share of investment in GDP was 9.2 percentage points lower than that of final consumption and the contribution of investment to economic growth was 32.1 percent, 26.7 percentage points lower than final consumption.
China has gradually created sound interaction between effective investment and consumption upgrading, according to the bureau.
Calculated with constant prices, China鈥檚 GDP rose 33.5 times in the 1978-2017 period, representing an average annual growth of 9.5 percent, much higher than a world average of about 2.9 percent during the same period.
