City cargo tonnage rises
CARGO transport in Shanghai rose 5.5 percent from a year earlier to 68.9 million tons in May, thanks to the city's stable economic growth and better logistics infrastructure, the Shanghai Statistics Bureau said today.
Road transport contributed the most by handling 34.8 million tons of cargo, while air freight surged 50.6 percent year on year to 337,600 tons. Rail and water transport both maintained a steady growth rate around 5 percent.
The two airports in the city handled altogether 5.76 million passengers last month, a jump of 17.4 percent from a year earlier.
Analysts expected the air traffic will continue to increase in the following months with more visitors of the World Expo 2010 due before it closes in October.
