City spotlight on culture and creativity
SHANGHAI plans to integrate culture and creative industry into a new pillar industry expected to drive the city's economic growth, top city officials said today.
Culture and the creative sector is expected to rank as Shanghai's No. 2 industry by its contribution to gross domestic product, second only to information and communications technology, said Ai Baojun, Shanghai deputy mayor.
GDP of the local creative industry, which covers research, architecture design, culture, consulting and fashion, reached 114.8 billion yuan (US$16.8 billion) last year, which accounted for 7.7 percent of the city's total GDP in 2009, up 1.9 percentage points from the previous year, according to Wang Jian, director of the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economy and Information Development.
Traditional culture accounted for 5.8 percent of the city's total GDP but parts are shared with the creative industry. Therefore, the city has established a new office to promote the culture and creative industry, according to Yin Yicui, the deputy Party secretary of Shanghai.
"The industry is an environmentally friendly industry with high added value and it will play an important role for the city to transform its economic structure," Ai said.
The move will improve the international image of Shanghai, which aims to be an international "design city," according to Yin.
To fuel the development of "green" industry, the commission launched a city-level platform for information sharing and project display. This will feature new functions like joint development on new technologies and establishing investment channels, according to commission director Wang.
