Committee set up to rule online business

China today unveiled a specialty e-commerce quality control standard committee in a bid to streamline quality control measures for goods sold via online retailers and their service standards for online shoppers.

The committee, an affiliate to the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, was put forward by the Zhejiang Provincial Administration of Quality and Technical Supervision and the AQSIQ approved its establishment earlier this year.

The commission and its members from industry practitioners would work on the standard that specify how online vendors publish and introduce their goods on e-commerce sites and guidelines such as how e-commerce platforms would examine qualified vendors as well as handle consumers’ refund requests, which are set to complete the supervisory system and quality control measures of the e-commerce industry for its smooth development in the future.

Zheng Junfang, Alibaba Group deputy chief financial officer and head of its intellectual property rights protection and anti-counterfeits division, told a media interview today that the new standards are expected to bridge the gap between manufacturing standards and consumer protection rules to ensure quality protection.

At the same time, the e-commerce giant also pledges to strengthen collaboration with domestic administrative authorities and public security bureaus to crack down on counterfeit goods manufacturers and vendors.
