DHL plans new Shanghai terminal for ecommerce business
DHL today announced the launch of a new terminal for ecommerce business in Jiuting Town in Songjiang District amid rapid expansion in the country’s cross-border and domestic e-commerce trade volumes.
The new base in Shanghai, along with its transfer center at Pudong International Airport, will help reduce delivery times for overseas parcels by up to three days, said Thomas Kipp, CEO of DHL eCommerce.
China’s e-commerce trade volume in the first half of 2015 already surpassed the whole of 2014, according to Kipp.
The logistics company will also launch additional drop-off centers in northern and southern China by the end of the year. These drop-off centers will complement the Shanghai terminal. The centers will gather large volumes of shipments from elsewhere in China before they move to the Shanghai terminal for distribution around the world, Kipp said.
Kipp added that DHL would not offer door-to-door deliveries within China because there are already too many courier firms with small market shares apart from state-owned EMS.
“We will keep a close eye on the Chinese market and look for chances to cooperate with local courier firms to offer the final delivery service to customers,” he said.
Meanwhile, the company announced it would cooperate with Bayern Munich football club to open an online shop to transport the club’s team kits and other products from Germany to Chinese cities.
