Domestic firms head Hurun's CSR list
A total of 32 Chinese firms and 18 multinational companies comprised the latest Hurun Corporate Social Responsibility Top 50.
"Many brands have realized a good CSR program can give them a competitive edge," said Rupert Hoogewerf, founder and chief researcher of the Hurun Report.
The chart tracks the 50 companies with the best CSR programs in China and is largely based on a survey of 50 CSR experts in China. The experts include industry professionals, academics and media across the country.
The voting accounted for 50 percent of the final result while tax payments and number of employees made up 30 percent. Corporate donations and environmental evaluations accounted for the remaining 20 percent.
The number of multinational companies increased 50 percent from a year ago while privately owned companies hold 10 positions on the list.
Of the 50 companies, 18 are also on the Hurun Most Valuable Chinese Brands List 2010, which tracks domestic consumer brands and was released earlier this month.
Charitable deeds and CSR projects lifted these companies' brands.
Bayer stood out as the company with the most respected CSR program among multinational firms, followed by HSBC and Intel.
Domestically, Vanke, Lenovo and China Mobile held the top places.
The most respected CSR programs were ranked according to votes from 50 experts. Each expert was asked to name 10 companies, including at least one state-owned company, one MNC and one privately owned firm.
Charitable donations from the top 50 companies totaled 11.4 billion yuan (US$1.68 billion) in the past five years.
