Forbes ranks search engine boss Li as richest on mainland
ROBIN Li, founder and CEO of search engine giant Baidu, has replaced heavy machinery mogul Liang Wengen as the richest mainlander, Forbes said today.
It is the second time for Li to become the richest on the mainland. The 43 year-old with US$10.2 billion fortunes moved nine positions up to rank 86th on the global Forbes Billionaire List 2012.
Liang, 55, ranks 113th globally with US$8.1 billion after the cooling construction market and stock market fluctuation led to a drop in his wealth.
The Hong Kong-based real estate and ports magnate Li Kai-shing, 83 secured the title of China's richest. Ranking 9th on the list with US$25.5 billion net wealth, he reclaims the title of Asia's richest man for the first time since 2004.
The list counted counts 1,226 billionaires this year, which is an all-time high. The billionaire club's combined net worth is up 2 percent from last year, with an average fortune of US$3.7 billion.
Forty Chinese billionaires are knocked off the list this year, including 36 from the Chinese mainland and four from Hong Kong. Many are from pharmaceutical and property sectors.
Twenty new Chinese faces appeared on the list, including 15 mainlanders. The number of Chinese mainland billionaires totals 95.
The US remains the biggest home around to world to the super rich, with 420, up from 412 last year.
Telecoms tycoon Carlos Slim of Mexico tops the list for the third consecutive year with US$69 billion, followed by Microsoft founder Bill Gates with US$61 billion and investing magnate Warren Buffett with US$44 billion.
