French drug firm accused of doctor kickbacks

FRENCH drug firm Sanofi is reported to have offered cash kickbacks of about 1.7 million yuan (US$274,193) to at least 500 doctors in 79 hospitals.
The payments were made around November 2007 at hospitals in Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou and Hangzhou, according to information from an anonymous whistleblower, the 21st Century Business Herald reported today.
The payments were made to doctors under the name of “research fees or grants” linked to two cardiovascular drugs, according 21st Century.
Some were paid several times and some were one-time payments.
Sanofi said it is carrying out internal inspections but cannot comment on the content of the material yet, 21st Century reported.
The two drugs are Irbesartan, and Irbesartan and Hydrochlorothiazide tablets that are used to treat high blood pressure, and both are prescription drugs.
Some materials also list Sanofi’s sales target from May to October in 2007 and the actual sales figures for those two drugs in major hospitals in Beijing, with the corresponding kickbacks for each hospital.
Sanofi’s China business covers consumer health care, vaccines and prescription drugs and it has six manufacturing sites in China.
