Gaopeng admits watch certificates faked

DAILY deals site Gaopeng admitted a retailer had counterfeited dealership authentication certificates of Tissot watches sold online last month.

Gaopeng, partly owned by the world's largest daily deals site Groupon, today said it would offer 200 yuan (US$31.5) to customers who had participated in the group-buying apart from getting the fake products refunded.

The official dealer of the Swiss watches said over the weekend it had reported the case to the police to safeguard its intellectual property rights.

Gaopeng said it had received complaints from the customers who spent 690 yuan for each Tissot watch. The original value of each watch is around 3,000 yuan.

The website first denied the accusations and insisted the watches were genuine after sending them to "authentic" Tissot retailers for identification.

In May this year, the website was accused of lottery fraud when two winners of a white iPhone4 lucky draw were found to be its own employees.
