Green focus set to boost firm's sales

THERMO Fisher Scientific Inc, the world's largest maker of science equipment and laboratory instruments, plans to sell more environmental-monitoring products in China whose government is focusing efforts to clean up the environment.

The government's pollution control effort is spurring demand for equipment used to monitor air, soil and water quality, according to Michael Shafer, president of Thermo Fisher China and its global environmental and process monitoring business.

Thermo Fisher's sales in China grew 20 percent to US$735 million last year.

The US company on Wednesday launched a US$9.5 million China innovation center in Jinqiao, Pudong New Area to boost its research, development and training capabilities. Expected to hire 200 to 300 engineers over the next two to three years, the center will support the high-growth markets in Asia Pacific, according to Shafer.
