Italy to boost food exports to China

ITALY hopes to export more genuine food products to China, and the World Expo in Shanghai this year will become a platform for Italy to showcase its culture in traditional farming, its Minister of Agriculture Luca Zaia said in Shanghai today.
"Italian food has a worldwide reputation just as Chinese food does," Zaia said. "We expect to sell more of our quality wine, cheese, ham, potato and olive oil to China."
Many food products sold in China are claimed to be made in Italy but only about 10 percent was of genuine Italian origin, Zaia said.
To fight against fake products and strengthen cooperation in food research and development, quality control as well as promote bilateral trade in food, Italy signed a memorandum with China's Ministry of Agriculture yesterday.
The memorandum also said the two countries will encourage cooperation between small and medium agricultural companies in each country.
Italy is home to 1.7 million agricultural firms, with 5 million people working in the industry. The country produced 80 billion euros (US$115.9 billion) worth of food products last year.
