Killing pests big business

CHINA'S pest-control industry could be worth 500 million euros (US$750 million) a year in the next few years, according to an industry executive.

The nation's commercial market for pest control is worth about 100 million euros now, and that could increase four or five fold in the next couple of years, said Alan Brown, chief executive of Britain's Rentokil Initial Plc, the world's biggest pest-control provider.

The market would probably be led by international customers in China in fields from hotels, restaurants to supermarkets, Brown said in Shanghai yesterday.

Brown, who was in Shanghai during the SARS outbreak in 2003, also said he found that people have become very conscious about hygiene.

"Pest control is the fundamental component of the hygiene agenda. We'd expect the Chinese market will continue to grow rapidly as consumer perception of the importance of pest control grows," said Brown, who was appointed the chief executive in April 2008.

The company, which entered China in 2005, also aims to become the industry leader in the domestic market although China sales only account for a small part of its business, said Chuck Jiang, managing director of Rentokil China.
