Local MNCs awarded for their innovative practices
Forty multinational companies including Siemens, GE, Covestro and Unilever were awarded today in a competition for good practice of foreign contributions in Shanghai’s construction of a global technology and innovation center.
The competition, co-hosted by Shanghai Daily and online news provider Eastday.com, received nearly 80 applications from multinational companies, each of which submitted one case or more of their practice in technological development and business innovation. Half of them stood out as winners in the competition and 12 were selected as the best.
Launched in June, the competition has grown beyond an event to compare contributions, but a platform to connect multinational companies, government officials, academicians and the general public together -- it was sponsored by the Shanghai Information Office and the Shanghai Commission of Commerce, while the judges included renowned scientists, scholars and voters from the public.
According to the organizers, the winners came out of careful review by an expert panel led by He Lin from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and more than 5.7 million online votes.
The best practices include Siemens Healthcare that have built up the world’s third and China’s first proton and heavy ion hospital in partnership with the local government, GE China’s aviation engineering team involved nearly 12 years in China’s construction of jumbo jets, and drug firm Boehringer-Ingelheim that set up China’s first and only bio-pharmaceutical base in line with the global standard.
The cases also cover innovation in management, such as Stora Enso that provides solution of intelligent packaging to improve supply chain. And some were related to ordinary people’s livelihood as well, like the practice of Roche Diagnostics that carries out nucleic acid test to ensure safety in blood transmission.
Multinational companies have responded actively in the competition, part of the national campaign to encourage mass entrepreneurship and innovation, and Shanghai’s initiative to become a global technology and innovation center. The cases were expected to set models for future policy planning, for promotion of local cooperation, for talent development and for corporate social responsibility.
Multinational companies are an important force of innovation in Shanghai, said Gu Jun, vice chairman of the Shanghai Commission of Commerce, at a ceremony held in Yangpu District.
The city is the largest base of foreign companies in China. By the end of September, 525 multinational companies have their regional headquarters in Shanghai, along with 391 research and development centers, official data showed.
