Merck opens plant in city to mix liquid crystals for screens

MERCK, the world's largest supplier of liquid crystals for television, computer and smartphone displays, opened a new facility in Shanghai today to boost local supplies and reduce reliance on imports.

The plant is the German company's fourth liquid-crystal mixing plant in Asia, joining plants in South Korea, Japan and Taiwan. Total investment in the Jinqiao-based project is "double-digit million euros," the company said, adding customer proximity is essential for the liquid-crystal business.

The company, which counts TV panel makers like Samsung and China's BOE as customers, expects demand to continue to boom in China over the next decade, driven by LCD TVs.

In liquid crystals, the German chemicals and pharmaceutical group competes with Japan's JNC Corp and DIC Corp.
