Ministry mulls guideline to govern e-commerce amid price war

The Ministry of Commerce said today it will work on a more detailed guideline with regard to e-commerce companies' marketing operations.
The comments came during the intensifying price war between China's leading online vendor and top home appliance retailers.
"The ministry will work on more detailed guidelines about online retailers' marketing activities and service standards," Wang Desheng, vice director of the Ministry's Distribution Development Department, said at a press conference in Beijing today.
Spokesman of the Ministry of Commerce Shen Danyang earlier this week also warned online retailers should comply with existing laws and regulations to ensure fair competition.
Gome and Suning, China's two largest electronics retailers, both announced they will keep prices of products at its offline retail outlets across the country at the same levels with those of its online store to boost sales.
However, market watchers warned that such price cuts could not have a long-term effect and consumers' demand will become weaker in the second half of the year.
