New tech empowers companies in different trades

Virtual reality, artificial intelligence and a number of new technologies are providing new opportunities for media agencies as well as e-commerce companies to grow new business and shift business models.

JD.com unveiled its latest smart refrigerator model at the CES Asia yesterday, aiming at providing an industry chain solution for smart devices manufacturers.

JD.com chief technology officer Zhang Chen told a keynote speech that it has also setablished a strategic partnership with Microsoft to drive artificial intelligence research and to enhance human-computer interaction experience.

It would seek partnership that could complement each party's resources in terms of retail channel and technology.

Last year, sales volume of smart devices at JD.com nearly tripled and the types of devices available also added 1.6 times from a year ago.

Isobar China Group chief executive officer Jane Lin-Baden told an interview with Shanghai Daily that the ownership cost of smart devices is significantly lower than smartphones, and that could give the media agency new opportunities to develop marketing content.

"The adoption of virtual reality technologies and smart devices would be first driven by gaming demand, as well as entertainment sporting content providers," she noted.

"These new technologies would give digital media agency like us to provide marketing innovations as well as propose new business model and revenues for clients," she said.

Isobar showcased its latest marketing innovations featuring VR and brainwave technologies at the show.

Alvin Wang Graylin, China Regional President of HTC's VR business, told a panel discussion at the CES that it would take two or three years before affordable smart devices or accessories to overtake the ownership of smartphones.
