Online store a 3G 'gold mine'
CHINA Mobile will officially launch its mobile phone application online store by the end of August as the telco diversifies its revenue by tapping other services.
The Mobile Market online store will help the country's No. 1 mobile carrier to keep its advantage in the 3G, or third generation, era over rivals China Unicom and China Telecom. China Unicom has clinched a deal with Apple to launch the iPhone in the domestic market by the end of this year.
Users can download mobile phone application software, including games, themes, music and videos, from Mobile Market. They pay for what they download directly through their mobile phone bills. The Mobile Market store supports various handsets including Nokia, Dopod and Motorola, but not the iPhone.
"The mobile application platform has become a gold mine for each carrier, especially in the 3G age," said Wu Wenzhao, a telecommunications analyst at Analysys International.
