Ontario to boost research cooperation with China

The Canadian province of Ontario expects more research and innovation partnerships with China as part of efforts to strengthen its economy.

Reza Moridi, Minister of Research and Innovation of Ontario, has recently finished a weeklong mission to China focusing on collaboration opportunities in areas ranging from life sciences, information technology to clean technology.

“Global partnerships between talented researchers and innovative companies lead to advances beyond what any of us could accomplish working alone,” Moridi said. “By further strengthening our research and innovation ties with China, we can enhance the role of technology in providing better healthcare and improving our environment, while supporting high-value jobs at home for today and for the future.”

The mission was wrapped up with 12 collaboration projects between Ontario and Chinese research institutions and industry supported under a memorandum of understanding between Ontario and China’s Ministry of Science and Technology.

Also, a commitment of an additional C$10 million (US$8.89 million) in joint Ontario-China funding to support the next round of collaboration projects under the MoU was also announced.

Moridi also said the advancement of China’s legal system has made intellectual property protection a smaller concern for Canada’s business community.

“Always corporations are concerned about how they can transfer technology and know-know from one corporation to another corporation and from one jurisdiction to another jurisdiction,” he said in an interview in Shanghai. “But with the further development of the legal system, I think this concern is less and less than in the past.”
