Pharmaceutical executive who committed suicide linked to corruption

The former chairman and general manager of Harbin Pharma Group Sanjing Pharmaceutical Shareholding Co who committed suicide last month was linked to a series of corruption cases, Beijing News reported today.

Liu Zhanbin escaped from police custody and jumped to his death out of a third story window on May 18. He was still Sanjing Pharmaceutical’s chairman and general manager at the time of his death. It had been reported he was under investigation before his suicide, but no details about the case were released.

Beijing News reported that his case was linked with China Resources Heilongjiang Pharmaceutical Corp and Liu Yanduo, former chairman of the company.

Police received tips from a former China Resources Heilongjiang Pharmaceutical Corp employee about Liu Yanduo, who is not related to Liu Zhanbin, the report said. During that investigation, police found unspecified evidence linking Liu Zhanbin to bribery.

After Liu Zhanbin’s suicide, Sanjing Pharmaceutical said it had been notified by the People’s Procuratorate of Heihe City in Heilongjiang Province that police were investigating their employee.

The People’s Procuratorate of Heihe City in Heilongjiang Province has set up an independent investigation to determine whether there was any misconduct in Liu Zhanbin’s case, according to the report.
