Poll: Housing tops all topics for millions of Chinese

AFFORDABLE housing topped the list of issues that concerned people most, an online survey showed today ahead of the annual sessions of China's lawmakers and political advisers.

It was followed by wealth distribution, inflation, official corruption and fair employment -- all hot topics to be addressed by policymakers.

"People's concerns are all down-to-earth and related with their daily life," said Huang Renwei, vice president of the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences. "If you want to summarize people's demand in one word, it is 'fairness'."

The annual session of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, China's top political advisory body, will open tomorrow, while China's top legislature, or the National People's Congress, will open its annual session on Saturday.

Shanghai members of the CPPCC and the NPC, including Party Secretary Yu Zhengsheng and Mayor Han Zheng, have flown to Beijing this morning.

The online poll conducted jointly by xinhuanet.com and sina.com showed that millions of Chinese chose the issue of affordable housing as the topic they were concerned most about.
