Pudong eyes big on Internet Plus initiative

Shanghai’s Pudong New Area held its first Internet Plus Conference today as it’s seeking to build itself into a cluster of the Internet industry.

Organized by the Pudong Commission of Commerce, the event brought together nearly 500 participants from e-commerce companies, venture capital firms and government departments to discuss potential development and cooperation opportunities in the Internet Plus area.

The notion of Internet Plus, brought up by Premier Li Keqiang in March, refers to a plan to integrate mobile Internet, cloud computing, big data and the Internet of Things with modern manufacturing.

Xin Yaqin, director of the commission, said Pudong is developing the 13th five-year plan for e-commerce, aiming to promote the construction of e-commerce zones and to take advantage of free trade zone policies to support the sector.

Currently, nearly 200 e-commerce companies are settled in Pudong, with total transaction value at 354.4 billion yuan (US$57.2 billion) in 2014, accounting for 26 percent of the city total.
