Roche Children’s Walk supports AIDS orphans

THIS year’s Roche Children’s Walk is set to take place at Century Park tomorrow as the world’s largest bio-tech company continues to support the disadvantaged and vulnerable groups.

Wang Yumin, director of the Chinese Foundation for Prevention of STD and AIDS, and Hong Chow, general manager of Shanghai Roche Pharmaceutical Ltd, will be joined by Roche China’s employees, media partners as well as people who are keen on philanthropy and public deeds for the walk.

The funds they raised through sponsored walks will be used to support and raise awareness for AIDS orphans. The funds will be used for supportive projects for orphans in Tongren City in Guizhou Province through the Chinese Foundation for Prevention of STD and AIDS. The orphans under the program will receive daily expenses, medial subsidies and other incidental expenditure.

Roche Children’s Walk is one of the most important public service activities from Roche and showcases the company’s long-term commitment toward sustainable development, which is deep inside in Roche’s culture.

The pharmaceutical giant hopes to raise awareness among a wider audience about AIDS orphans through continued public deeds.

Roche believes it’s not only the donation that matters, the AIDS orphans also need actual companion to open their heart. The company’s program offers a caring hand to these children.

Roche Children’s Walk is a heritage program since the Swiss company first launched the campaign in 2003 to support vulnerable children in underdeveloped regions.

Each year on June 16, Roche employees at more than 120 company sites around the world will show their solidarity with children in need by raising funds through sponsored walks.

Over 150,000 employees from 120 Roche sites around the globe have participated over the years and joined efforts for a common cause. Since 2003, a total of five orphan centers have been equipped in Malawi, in addition to 5.6 million meals and 30,000 school uniforms.

With 62 percent of the population living below the international poverty line of US$1.25 per day and 790,000 children orphaned due to HIV/AIDS, Roche said that its goal is to foster long-term sustainable change by providing food, education, practical skill training and health promotion for poverty-stricken children.

Globally, as much as 12.5 million Swiss francs (US$13.4 million) have been raised since 2003.

Roche also assumes all walk and funding administrative expenses to make sure all donations raised directly benefit the children.

In China, Shanghai Roche Pharmaceutical Ltd has been working with the Chinese Foundation for Prevention of STD and AIDS to help AIDS orphans in Tongren City since 2010.

A representative group of employees has been visiting Tongren City since 2012 annually to visit local orphans and organize all kinds of activities for them.

Besides Roche employees, anyone interested is encouraged to join this year’s Children’s Walk activity and to make a donation for children in need.
