Shanghai company unveils sophisticated CT scanner

A Shanghai company has invented a PET/CT scanner that can detect tumors in early stage and is much more efficient than normal CT machines. When the new scanner is put into mass production, the cost of a PET/CT scan can be cut by two-thirds.

Before Shanghai United Imaging Healthcare Company invented this new machine, the CT scan technology was monopolized by two to three foreign companies. Their machines cost about 20 million yuan (US$3.3 million) each.

United Imaging has the largest research team among domestic imaging products manufacturers. Many of its senior executives come from joint ventures.

Besides United Imaging, other medical equipment companies in Shanghai also recruited high-end professionals from abroad who want a place to fulfill their dreams.

Liu Mingyan, president of Shanghai Sanyou Medical Equipment Company, for example, used to be the chief scientist of a world-famous company but he failed to convince his CEO to make products suitable for Chinese patients. So he quit his job and founded his own company in Shanghai. Zhou Daixing, founder of Berry Genomics, and Zhang Qiang, CEO of United Imaging, had the same stories. Their factories are all located in an industrial park in Jiading District.
