Shanghai to speed up tech trading to grow into a hub

SHANGHAI will accelerate the promotion of technology trading this year to help develop the city into a global trading center.

Sha Hailin, chairman of the Shanghai Commission of Commerce, said yesterday that the city will contact more global technology transfer intermediaries as well as adopt international practices and improve intellectual property protection to speed up technology transfer.

"Technology trading is much more complicated than trading of goods or services," Sha said. "It is more of a systematic project that we need to digest, absorb and upgrade the technology that is transferred.

An initiative was made last year when the Shanghai International Technology Exchange Center was established to bolster the trading of technology in China. Teaming up with the Shanghai Institute of Foreign Trade, the center has started a training program to cultivate technology trading professionals.

Benjamin Stengl, vice president of the German Technologies Center, said Shanghai is ready for international trading in technology transfer because the city is home to hundreds of global high-tech companies which have set up research and development centers and has a supportive government.
