Swire celebrates 150th anniversary of doing business in China

John Swire & Sons Ltd, a conglomerate in diversified businesses including property, aviation, shipping, logistics, retail, food and apparel, pledges to continue investment in China to show its long-term commitment in the country.

In particular, the company expects better performance in Shanghai, a city marking the start of Swire’s business in the Chinese mainland.

“Our businesses in China are thriving,” said Barnaby Swire, chairman of John Swire & Sons Ltd. “Our ties to the city of Shanghai remain strong with our fist mixed-use property development here due to be launched later this year.”

Swire entered the Chinese market 150 years ago after its establishment in 1816 in the United Kingdom. John Samuel Swire, Barnaby Swire’s great great grandfather, arrived in Shanghai from England in 1886 and established his trading and shipping agency business, which later expanded into many other industries.

To celebrate Swire’s 200th anniversary this year and the 150th anniversary of the opening of its first office in China, Swire published a book, telling the story of how a small import-export trading firm evolved into a global conglomerate.

“The Chinese market has been driving our growth,” said Barnaby Swire. “We believe China will continue to create new opportunities for us.”

He added Swire’s strengths lie in its focus on quality and sustainability, which will enable the firm to continue add value to the Chinese domestic market as Swire sets out on the next new chapter of its history.
