Virtual reality’s real future
Virtual reality will become commodity device and service for normal consumers soon, thanks to booming investment and big brands coming into the sector especially in China, Shanghai Daily learned during a forum of the Shanghai International Film and TV Festival yesterday.
During the festival’s VR summit, start-up and giants demonstrated coming VR contents covering game, film and application globally and in China, targeting mass consumers rather than niche market for techno-savvy fans now.
China needs to develop its own VR eco-system because overseas VR contents and systems developed by Facebook and Google won’t be suitable in China, speakers said.
Xiaomi Corp will debut its first VR device in August, integrating MIUI operating system with more than 200 million users globally, Thomas Tang, general manger of Xiaomi’s new VR business.
It was the latest big brand joining the VR wave following Facebook, HTC, Sony and Samsung.
VR has “infinite opportunities” as it has become the most influential technology in the next decade after micro-processor, personal computer and mobile Internet.
The sales of VR devices worldwide are expected to increase by 24 times in 2016, creating opportunities for consumer, gaming, entertainment and business applications providers to ride this wave, said the International Data Corp, a US-based IT research firm.
Movement capture has been integrated with VR on film production, education and retail. For example, some VR devices with such features are used in the museums in Shanghai.
VR films and VR experiences like Apollo 13 moon landing and Titanic adventure will soon be available in the mass market, said Digital Domain, a special effect and VR production firm.
