Aston Martin to ride on rising demand

BRITISH luxury sports car maker Aston Martin said it will expand in China in a big way as it taps the growing demand from the increasing number of rich people in the country.

The maker of cars driven by James Bond expects to more than double its sales on the Chinese mainland from 190 last year to 500-700 units this year, according to CEO Ulrich Bez at the opening of its global flagship store in Shanghai's Pudong New Area over the weekend.

It also expects to further lift sales to 1,000 units by 2013 or 2014, which will drive China to take up 20 percent of its global sales and make it its No. 3 market after the US and UK.

In order to propel sales, Aston Martin set up its own trading company on the mainland last year and unveiled its Chinese-language website to entice domestic customers. It is also targeting a network of 10 dealers in the world's largest auto market by March this year, up from four by the end of last year. It intends to open new stores in Shenzhen and Guangzhou.

The Shanghai flagship store, one of its largest in the world, will help Aston Martin to drive sales as the growing number of Chinese consumers sparks demand for luxury vehicles.
