China now included in Toyota recall
Toyota will recall 5,202 imported Lexus cars in China to fix a malfunctioning gas-pedal problem from March 23, China's General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine said yesterday.
The recall announcement came after the world's biggest auto maker said China was not included in its last two -global -recalls of more than 4 million vehicles because the problem vehicles were either not sold in China or the models sold here were not affected by the flaws found in the United States and Europe.
Now, according to Toyota, 5,202 imported Lexus RX300/350 cars made between February 2003 and July 2006 will be recalled in China due to possible safety hazards.
If the floor carpet around the accelerator pedal is not properly replaced in the correct position, there is a possibility that the plastic pad embedded into the floor carpet may interfere with the operation of the accelerator pedal. If this occurs, the accelerator pedal may become temporarily stuck in a partially depressed position, rather than returning to the idle position, Toyota said.
Chinese customers have been concerned that the recalls Toyota announced on January 26 and Thursday neglected Chinese people's concerns in one of the few markets where Toyota has seen profit growth in recent years.
At the request of the quality administration, Xu Yiming, a spokesman for Toyota Motor (China) Investment Co, said cars sold in China used different parts from those sold in overseas markets, which is why the world's largest auto market was not included in its global recalls.
In January recall, Toyota said it was recalling nearly 1.7 million vehicles worldwide because of various defects that could cause fuel leaks. The models affected includes the Lexus GS luxury models in North America, the Avensis sedan and station wagon models in Europe, and the Noah subcompacts, RAV4 sport-utility vehicles, and Wish cars in Japan.
On Thursday, the company said it had to call back 2.39 million vehicles around the world because of faulty accelerator pedals.
