China to challenge WTO ruling on tires
China will lodge an appeal after a close study of the World Trade Organization's ruling report over Chinese tires to defend rights of the country's tire industry, the Ministry of Commerce said today.
The statement was issued one day after the WTO dispute panel decided that the United States was entitled to impose extra safeguard duties on Chinese tires.
"The ministry feels sorry for such a ruling," the statement said. "We are looking closely to the possible negative influence, and will appeal at an appropriate time to defend legal rights of Chinese tire makers."
In September 2009, the US announced the three-year punitive duties on US$1.8 billion of tires from China. The case led a pile of trade disputes concerning products ranging from chicken, steel, oil drill pipe, electric blanket, coated paper to copper tube and many others. But the tire case remained the largest in terms of value so far.
The Chinese government has been reiterating that such tariffs broke WTO rules and were serious trade protectionism, which China resolutely opposed. China lodged a complaint at the WTO dispute panel against the tire duties three days after the Obama administration announced it.
